For Sheri Terry, makeup artist and creator of the YouTube channel Makeup With an Attitude, the artistry of makeup—and its part in any collaboration—is much like storytelling. “I always keep in my mind when I’m approaching a project: What is my role in telling this story?” she says. Terry also likens the process to making music: “Not everyone can play loudly all the time; you’ll end up with noise.
Sometimes someone else has the lead and you are her backup, supporting her to make the creation ‘sound’ even better. I think intuitively recognizing your role in a team serves a makeup artist very well,” she says. Here, Terry shares the products that give her a leg up in her role as a makeup maestro.
1) For Bulletproof Coverage
NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer: “It’s crease-proof, yet it’s like butter to blend. And then it stays on for hours. What more could one want in a concealer?”
2) For a Hydrated Glow
Babor Lift Express Fluid: “This is my special secret weapon. ... It gives the most beautiful hydrated glow to the skin. I allow it to sit and absorb into the skin for at least five minutes before I apply anything over it.”
3) For Matte Moisturization
Jao LipJao Lip Balm: “I originally bought this lip balm for when I do men’s grooming because it’s not shiny like most balms. One day in a pinch, I had on a super-matte lip
and needed hydration. I ended up trying it on myself and discovered it made my lips much more comfortable, but didn’t add shine to my matte lip color.”
4) For a Smudgy Eye
Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Underground, Mushroom and Whiskey: “I use these shades in particular to add a soft, smudgy contour around the lash line or on the water line for a stronger dose of color.”
5 For Otherwordly Skin
Temptu 24-Hour Hydra Lock Airbrush Foundation: “For airbrushing, this foundation provides a beautiful moisturizing veil that is longwearing, even in extreme weather conditions. And, I can quickly cover boo-boos on the body.”
